Every dog has his day.

A.R. Rahman, Rasool Pookutty and Gulzar won Academy Awards for their work in Slum Dog Millionaire. Am I proud of these men who finally got their international recognition?
Yes, I am so proud that I jumped with joy, and stayed up in spite of having high fever. Was their work outstanding enough to merit academy awards? Having seen two of the movies nominated for Best Music Score, WALL-E and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I don't think A.R. Rahman's score for Slumdog was any better. This was also not the best film that came out of India to address the pain and suffering of Mumbai slums. The film was at best poverty-porn, which was clearly entertaining and uplifting to a western audience who was reeling from their financial crises and needed to see people living under much worse conditions. Entertainment at whose expense? Ours of course. A sort of voyeuristic entertainment from seeing poverty and exploitation at Dickensian levels.

Should we really feel proud about these awards? A few golden statuettes cannot heal insults thrown at our citizens through this movie. A.R. Rahman who gave us so many hits, far greater in composition and musical texture gets an academy award for a number song that would not have seen the light of day, had it been part of any of his previous albums. There may not be a major conspiracy behind these awards as some might allude. What ever the mechanics that work behind these awards, they are clearly not based on the artistic merits of Slumdog Millionaire. I can safely conclude that the mood at the Kodak Theater yesterday was to some how remunerate the people and nation who provided Chicken Soup for the soul at a time of terrible crisis.

  6. I would have never heard or respected a person like Resul Pookkutty if he had not won the Oscars last morning. Thanks to academy awards.

Of course the Movie’s definitely not worth the hype that it has received for sure. But then that’s their criteria and standard (?) of good movies. Why should we, Indians be worried about it? Its just like the way we look at America, which could be entirely different from what Americans presume their nation to be. Its just a matter of perception. We can’t expect an outsider to look at things exactly the way we want them to. Can we? But calling it UPA government’s achievement is disgusting

By the way 60-65 % of Bombay’s population lives in the slums.

  7. I dont think the song "Jai Ho" comes anywhere in Rahman's best songs. But he deserved such an award for his contributions. Lets count it that way.

And Its so stupid to say that the film has only negative aspects. The film need to show only what the story demands. And whatever picturised in the film does exist in india. So wats there to complain?

I love this film for it's artistic values, I love this film for the realism, I love this movie for it's script and direction, I love this movie because of the young kids who showed great acting skills. Slum Dog deserved the very best award in the world and got it....Simple as it is....taking the film too far, way above what the film portrays is bull shit patriotism from few looser Indians. Ee film kandittu oro indiakkaraneyum kaliyakkukayanu, apamanikkukayanu ennu thoonnunna ellavarum kaanikkunnathu avante mattedathey patriotism aanu. All I have to say is why don't you resign whatever you are doing and maybe arrange a protest against the slums in Dharavi, or help them build a better future. As long as you are not willing do these then there is no point talking against this film. You doesn't mean Kaippally.

Third class working people, or people living in the slums will be always slum dogs. This is reality in India. How often do you have your kooli panikkar eat out of your dining table? How often do you treat them equally?

  13. I dont know whether this is to be made an issue.
The movie was not that good and all, but it was an ok movie. On the other side, for the people who know little about India, they might find it interesting...
There were better bollywood movies than slumdog for sure on mumbai slums and all, but they were not in english, and so was not a candidate for academy awards, the only award they can compete for is the foreign language movie award where movies from all world languages compete.

Then "Slum dog" is what an indian calls an another indian in the movie, I didnt feel that it was like calling the whole indians as slum people or anything..
